First, figure out the "discriminant". This is the part of the quadratic formula that is under the radical. To get this, do the square root of a^2-4ac. If the discriminant is negitive, we get no reals solutions to the equation.
Next, we know that the top part of the formula is "-b+ or -" and the discriminant. We find this by getting the opposite of b and adding and subtracting it from the discriminant, then to get the answers we devide all of that by 2*a.
